with a d50 how long can the shutter be left open on bulb mode (?) Just a newbie question. I just like using long exposures for some shots and was wondering about this.

It'll go on as long as you have the shutter button down. Normally you would use a remote for this to avoid camera shake and avoid keeping your finger on the shutter button. You can probably Macgyver-it and use tape, although I wouldn't suggest duct tape, but use a blue masking tape.
