Default tamron 28-200 f/3.8 XR lens

Has anyone actually used the Tamron 28-200 f/3.8 XR lens and compared it to others? Some say to forget about Tamron and go with Canon or Nikon lenses, and some say this lens is superb. I don't know who is right, but the truth must be out there.

I have the Tamron 28-300 XR lens and use it on my D100. I am very happy with the performance of this lens plus it is incredibly lightweight compared to other lenses with much less focal length coverage. I'm sure the 28-200 XR is built and performs the same.

The Tamron 28-200 F3.8 is a good lens and is better than Tamron's 28-200 Super II. However, both exhibit some chromatic aberration. Moreover, the 200mm end is short of real 200mm, compared with prime lenses, especially in close range (e.g., 3-5m). In fact, it is at best around 150mm. Nikon's 28-200 is not so great either. I had the two Tamron's mentioned above and the Nikon, and sold them all. IMO, Tamron's 24-135 is better. I do hope the new Nikon 24-120 VR is even better.

Hi CK,

Did you own a Tamron 24-135mm len? Any sample photos can be referenced?

Thanks!

I used one on my Canon Rebel 2000 35mm SLR, and I was never totally happy with it. It performs very well at 28mm, but there's a lot of chromatic aberration and pincushioning at 200mm. It also seemed to not work properly with the metering in the camera (although it's possible it was me doing something wrong). When zoomed in, the pictures would be washed out unless I underexposed one stop. The exposure was right at the wider end of the range.

Sorry, I sold this lens long time ago and do not have any image for your reference and/or comparison. IMO, it is better than the 28-200 in the range of 24mm and 100mm. Now, I am using Nikon's 17-35mm, 50mm F1.8, 70-200VR as my standard lens set, with 24-85(G) as a backup (rather than the old 24-120mm). Other lenses will be added as needed.
