Do the different metering modes have any effect when the camera is in Manual mode? I can understand how they have an effect in Av (metering mode alters the shutter speed) and Tv (vice versa), but how do they effect when shooting in Manual (as you're setting both shutter speed and aperture)?

When using the camera in manual mode the meter will show you what the camera has measured as the correct exposure. The different meter modes may produce different values depending on what parts of the scene it's metering.

The difference with manual is that you don't have to use any of the settings suggested by the camera's meter.

When the cam is in Shutter or Aperture priority mode it uses the selected metering mode to determine the shutter or aperture values respectively.

Metering modes come in Avernage, centre weighted and spot. This jsut determines where the cam focuses its metering from.

In manual mode the metering does nothing but create an exposure graph which will usually show you on an axis of -2ev to +2ev and where your elected manual settings sit. SO if your manual settings create (according to metering mode) a perfect exposure the graph will show 0ev.
