Default Fujifilm FinePix F401 vs Canon A303

I have read Steve's reviews on these two items and become confused about Effective Resolution versus photo size it can record to the storage media, although I think it is the camera adding pixels that were not on the CCD. The Fuji has a 2.1 Super CCD and can create a 4.0 mpxl file whereas the Canon has 3.2 on both the CCD and the file. BUT, is the quality of the Fuji 4.0 file less than the quality of the 3.2 file the Canon would produce? And if I chose a 3.2 file size on the Fuji, would it be noticeably inferior to the maximum size created by the Canon? (You may need to read the Steve's DigiCams reviews on these two to understand my confusion about which is the better camera to buy.)
Thanks for any help that can be provided.
