Default Giant Do-Do Bird Contest Winner

Hey Steve,

Is the April 2003 First Place DPOTD Contest winning photo for real?
http://www.steves-digicams.com/dpotd...3/04302003.jpg

It's one of the most disturbing photographs I've seen in a long time. It just does not make sense.

It's a joke, right?
===================

Update:

I totally eat my words. This gigantic bird supposedly exists
in Africa as the "Shoebill" or "Whale Headed Stork".

Sorry to Steve for doubting the photo, and the photographer
for that matter.

It is, however, a very good photograph.

Default Very Real Bird

The guy that took the photo explained all in a thread at DPreview:

What is even better is the "after" photo. (No, the duck wasn't hurt)

I'll have to admit that my first impression was that it looked like a Do Do bird, too! I'm glad to hear that both the author's reputation and that of Steve's POTD have been vilified.

"vilified" ???

...I think you mean exonerated.

It was a disturbing photo, but that's life in the bush!

Great action and angle!

Remind me to stay out of his territory.

I was just checking to see if anybody really knew what "vilified" meant. I purposely substituted it for the word "vindicated", as in the puns "Let's simoniz(e) our watches." and "I resemble that remark!" Isn't it interesting that it took three days for someone to reply, though? Good catch, reader!
