My favorite PhotoShop book is "PhotoShop Restoration & Retouching," by Katrin Eismann. While the 3rd edition is current for CS2, it really isn't specific to a particular program. Any layers program, like PaintShopPro, could be used for most of her stuff. She teaches you the idea of how to work with the images, and so it's a lot more valuable than the books that just teach you a sequence of key strokes. And it concentrates on just the kind of thing that I actually want to do with my images, rather than getting too far afield in weird special effects.
