Default Macro mode

In your opinion, are there any 3-4megapixel cameras (and not just among the newest ones) that stand out in macro photography, and are there ones to be avoided in this respect?

The thing is, many of the newer cameras have a super macro mode. For instance (from I know personally) the Olympus C-700UZ could only go as close as 4"/10cm while the newer C-730 can go as close as 1.6"/4cm.

I don't call that "standing out". If I needed more, I'd add macro-converter(s).

Look into Nikon's CoolPix line of camera's. Nikon is very well known for exceeding at this. I have a Nikon Coolpix 4300 which is able to focus on objects as close as 1.6 inches. The 4500 can focus as close as .8 inches I believe.
