I have a new Canon Digital XTR and would like to know if it is necessary to use the Macro Mode when taking a close up shot of 12 inches away.? Just what does the Macro mode do that is different? With the 18X55 kit lens the closest distance with this lens is about 11 inches. Is this using the lens at 18 mm or 55 mm or does it make any difference?

I'm not trying to be a "SmartAss", but the first thing you should do is read the owner's manual!!
