The surf magazine said I need to send 300DPI photos. Max photo size would be 8X10 but most would be more like 4X5. What will be required from me in terms of a digital camera? Would the Panasonic DMC-FZ7 @ 6 mgpxl work? How about the DMC - FZ 30 @ 8???? Thanks, I'm having trouble googling the answer...

Bob! For 8x10's at 300ppi you need about 7.2 MP, so the FZ7 falls a bit short.
But, it's so close at 6MP that the small amount of upsampling from 2816x2112 to
2400x3000 for the 8x10 might not cause a noticable loss of quality.

Something else to consider: Does the FZ30 have features that the FZ7 lacks that you might find useful enough to make the FZ30 worth the price increase?

@300 dpi an 8x10 inch print is (8x300=) 2400 x (10x300=) 3000 pixels = 7200000 = 7.2MP.

@300 dpi a 4x6 inch print is (4x300=) 1200 x (6x300=) 1800 pixels = 2160000 = 2.16MP.

Easy math. As stated, you can upsample to meet the 8x10 requirement unless the magazine specificly prohibits it.

Grant, mahalo nui loa (thank you very much) for a clear explanation tosolve my problem. In regards to the difference in the two models, aside from the 8 mgpxl FZ30 costing $130 more at my local Costco, there are no other features I think I need.

Thanks amazingthailand, it's easy math for me now. My plan was to travel to Bangkok sometime during the next year. Will lack of speaking Thai be a problem (I'm studying with a DVD but a slow language learner)?

How does one go about upsampling a 6mgpxl 8X10 photo to the required 300DPI?

What image processor do you use? IF photoshop then select the crop tool. Type "8 in" in the width box, "10 in" in the length box, and "300" in the dpi box and select as much of the image as is possible for that print size. This is the easiest way IMO.
