Default Question about megapixel

hi,

Little question why do they call the fujifilm s602 a 3 megapixel camera while it takes pictures with a resolution of 2832 x 2128 and they call the sony F717 a 5 megapixel camera when it takes pictures with a resolution of 2560 x 1920 ?

Am i missing the point here ?

In very simplistic terms, Fuji S602 use a 3 MPixels CCD , and “extrapolates” these data to create 6 MPixels final picture . This technique is used also in the Fuji S2 Pro-SLR ( 12 Mpixels picture from a 6 Mpixels CCD.
May be some member will give you a more technical description of this. This is also controversial and there are many debates about (saying that Fuji is “cheating”)

The 717 has a 5.24-million pixel CCD (gross), But uses some 4.9-million in the image.

The S602 has 3.3-million pixels CCD (gross). It uses some 3.1-million pixels in it’s image. As a Marketing Scheme the S602 also has a 6-million pixel-guessing mode. Where it guesses the pixels that would have been between the real pixels. Its made up, its guessing, there not real pixels. By most accounts the S602 is a fine 3.Megpixel camera.

I never owned a Fuji, but I think that if you like it, at least take a look at the reviews, look at sample pictures, compare them with other cameras outputs, it’s not just a matter of pixel count that counts.

When you get it down to one or two cameras, go to a store and handle them. Make sure they feel good in your hands. That the button placement fits you. That you like the weight.

The type of stuff which you'll really only know by holding one in your own hands..
