Default 3 mb = how many MP

I took some pictures to walmart to have developed and had them put on CD's also. The CD's came back as ~3MB JPG files. What is the approximate Megapixel comparison? Thanks in advance

There is no hard and fast direct relationship between MB and MPs.

As a rule of thumb the more MPs the more MBs.

It is quite possible to have a bigger 2mp file size than 3mp picture. This is because Jpeg is a compressable format.

You don't mention how many pics are on the CD.

My 3mp cam's pics are about 1.2mb per picture in SHQ mode but I can get that much smaller by compressing them more, by 10x if I wish.

Sorry, I've misinterpreded the question.

So 1.2mb per picture it is then - roughly.

Again compression matters but it's also a matter of how many pixels per inch (PPI) they scanned at.

What size are the images?

Not far from a pretty uncompressed 2mp image then.

2mp being 1200x1600.

It depends on what's on the picture also. I was taking pictures of last night's lunar eclipse and the file size of the images came out much smaller than usual just because most of the image was just black sky. Looks like this kind of image can be compressed a lot.

I was sending the pictures via e-mail to a friend who couldn't see the eclipse due to bad weather and the images were being compressed further. From 2160x1440 they were being reduced to 640x427 and some came out with a file size of just 11K in jpeg format.

My 4mp Coolpix 4500 (2272x1760) in the highest quality (other than uncompressed .TIFF) is 1.2 mb per picture, and the pictures have amazing quality to them...
