Default Canon G3 price too good? others in comparison

A large computer Mfr sent me a catalog with a misprint for a G3 price($299  ). Anyway, the price was 'too good to be true' but they did offer to sell it to me for 20% off or $559 (w/256Mb card)

My question(s) are many:

1) Is the G3 price too good to pass up?

I've been meaning to ask the following questions about a camera purchase in general:

- All in the context of a consumer who is NOT a photographer, but appreciates a quality lens and likes the best photos possible w/o totally manual shooting.

- FYI.. We've currently been shooting with a Nikon N60 SLR. We don't go totally manual, but do use all the program modes, not just the green 'catchall' mode. Probably the most manual we get is shooting the different action, night, macro modes and occasionally shutter or aperature priority modes.

- Most of our pictures are of our three kids and 'family' life.

2) Besides the G3, we're considering the Sony 717, the Minolta 7i or 7Hi, or one of the Nikon 4500, 5000 or 5700. In the sub $75 range, what's going to be our best bet given our shooting style, which is mostly automatic. One of the main reasons we're looking to these cameras is to get the best lens.

3) Many of these cameras use proprietary batteries, how big of an issue is that? I realize the OEM battery often has good capacity, but the cost is high. What's the best camera available that uses AA's. (I have several AA NiMH batteries for my GPS.)

Your recommendations are appreciated. We're read a lot of the reviews and are now looking for feedback from users. What do you like, not like about these cameras? From your experience and description of my shooting style, what to YOU recommend?

Thanks,

I have the 5700 and personally think its the best in its c(g)lass, pun intended

Read different reviews/comments, go to a shop and try them all out if you can. See what meets your needs.

5700 and G3 are constantly praised by reviewers and users. if you can handle the bulk they seem wise choices.

Default 5700

Hi,

I too have been stuck exactly where you are right now!! actually for quite sometime!! So much so i have saved up enough money to get a cannon 10D instead. (yay)

I have read so much about the 5700 and 7Hi it isn't funny.

I agree with all the previous comments, although the 5700 could really do with a manual focus ring.

I would if i where in your shoes go for the Nikon 5700.

However it is getting very long in the tooth, expect an upgrade shortly!! (straight out of a review i read)

I was going to have to spend alot of money on add on lenses and extras to get it to do what i thought i would need...so in the long run i decided on an dSLR.

A 10D body/lense package is only a little extra then the all up package of 5700,w/a lense, tele lense, etc... well a bit more than a little but you get more than a little more for your money!!!

5700 great cam just not slr........

Try and research any possibiltiy of it being superseeded in the near future....if so hold off it will be a beauty.
