I've never owned anything else so I guess I'm a little biased. I'm not opposed to trying another brand though.

I chose the Nikon D50 for a couple of reasons, the first of which may sound a little petty, but here goes...

I always used Canon "back in the film days", from the pellix to the ftb to the ae1, and all the lenses I bought would work with all those cameras. Then, Canon stopped producing FD and went with EF, and at the time I bought my Rebel film camera, I didn't give it much thought. Then came the shock that the FD lenses would adapt to EF , but I was not allowed to have the adapter, not being a "pro". I felt a little betrayed, so I vowed never to buy another canon product. Petty-- maybe.

Reason two- more realistic, I tried both the Rebel xt and D50 for fit in my hands and since I have large hands and weight has never been a deciding factor for me, I chose the Nikon.

Nikon has backward compatability with its lenses, along with most other camera makers, that far surpasses Canon, IMO.

Thanks for listening to my rant...

Robert

To bad you did not give other options Boily. I chose the Olympus E-500.

This topic has been discussed many, many times on the forum. Do a search and you'll find the many threads that discuss this. Which is better depends on who you ask, and many users are fanatical about their brand. Both are great brands and will yield great results, as will all other current DSLR's. Which you choose should be based on ergonmics and ease of use for you. What works for me is not really relevent to what may work for you.

I have owned and used Nikon since the early 70's. My first SLR was a Nikkormat FTn. Even back then I prefered the ergonomics of Nikon over Canon (although, it wasn't called ergonomics back then - LOL).
