My HP Photosmart 812 has stopped taking pictures.
No matter what I do, what setting I use, change the batteries, trying different memory cards, etc., when I take a picture, I get a black image. Nothing.

Sometimes, if I remove the batteries and let the camera sit for a couple of days before replacing them, the camera will take ONE ore TWO images before returning to my problem: black, empty pictures. NO IMAGES.

Any ideas as to why this may be happening?

I have the same problem with the black pictures, even with recharged batteries. Went to a parade yesterday, took about 20 pictures and they are all black! Did you find a solution?

I have the same problem with my photosmart 635. Did the reset, updated firmware and of course new batteries. Still get black display on viewer and black pictures that it takes. Tech support from HP says hardware problem, I still chatting with them, Ill let you know what I find, might help you. If I cant fix it for a low cost or have them fix it for free... it will probably get the treatment shown to my happy face.

Edit to my note: Confirmation from HP cost of around $200 to have them fix it, looks like a shutter problem in the lens. Possible to get generic part to fix shutter or simply unstick the shutter. Going to let my Electronic Tech of a brother play with it, whats the worst he can do... other than that its time to buy new.

I have the same problem with my HP 635. Or I should say, I did.
To save people time, this is the problem - it has nothing to do with resetting it or what sequence of buttons you push on start up or the camera's firmware.
It is a electro-mechanical problem of the shutter staying closed after you turn it on.
I took mine out of its case, which is simple to do, but thats about as far as you are going to get.
You can insert the batteries without the front case and power it up by using the tiny slide switch on the top of the frame of the camera assembly..
What you need to do is unstick the shutter. You don't even need to take it apart to do this.
On power up, and about the halfway mark of it extending the lens, give the side of the lens a good rap with a small screw driver. You should see the shutter open. Then you will get back your LCD
viewer and can take pictures again. Sometimes just banging on something works.
