Default Hp R817 won't stay turned on

Hi,
I came across your site from Google.
I have a HP R817 camera that won't stay turned on. As soon as I turn it on it shuts off.
Any ideas where I could start to diagnose the problem? I thought it was the battery, changed it, but that doesn't seem to be it.
Thank you in advance

I'd see what happens if you remove the memory card, just in case it's shorting it out somehow. Sometimes a jammed gear in lens mechanism can do the same thing (so a camera shuts down so that it doesn't burn up any components trying to move it).

Thank you for the quick reply JimC. I've tried that, but would there be any way a camera could get a virus ?

Sorry, but that's very unlikely. A Camera is running from instructions built into it's firmware (stored in EEPROM), using custom ASICs for some functions.

Well, kind of a shot in the dark JimC..

I was hoping that there was some kind of reason, as opposed to the camera could be toast. I'm surprised that this camera seems to be a popular camera, but no-one has experienced this problem.

Anyway, thanks JimC.

Try turning the camera on while holding the play button (right pointing arrow at the bottom of the LCD screen). If the camera turns on in picture review mode and stays on as you review pictures, try getting out of play mode to see if that works.

You might have either a nearly dead battery (they DO eventually wear out) or a jammed lens.
