Default very strange effects on a HP320

A friend asked took the strangest shot I've ever seen: http://www.doct.ro/WOW.jpg [459kb]. The image is unretouched except the recompression. About 30 more pictures were shot, none of them exhibiting such effect.

What could it be - lens flare, ghosting (the optical kind :twisted or what? There also seems to be a 3rd artefact in the lower left corner, which indeed resembles flare, but the other two are not that easy to explain.

Camera was a HP320.

Kinda off topic, but I once took a picture of a friend, who was giving the "thumbs up" sign to the camera. And when the film was developed he had this light orb directly on the tip of his thumb. I'm not quite sure what that was...but it was cool.

Sorry, I don't know what caused the "ghost" balls in your friend's pictures, but it looks kinda cool.

Could it be remnant water stain? Did the lens experience moisture at one time such as rain drops that have dried?

Default hmm....

Don't think so - but none of the pics taken before or after exhibited that effect. Also the guy took pretty good care of the camera and there was little liquid in the area

It does look like water or dust spots on or inside the front lens. I have this model camera, and I have seen these things appear in some photos too. Because of the size of the sensor and lens, these could be smaller than what can be discernable by eye.

I have discovered on my one dust INSIDE the lens which cannot be wiped off, and the camera's been meticulously cared for and always inside its Lowepro pouch when not in use, so I've had worse problems than you.

Luckily there's photoshop and clone stamping.

I think it's just dust that was floating around and got caught in the flash. I've seen this before on one of my indoor shots.

It's a UFO!:?

I agree with JackRussell. I've also seen this before (dust floating that got caught up in the flash).
