As regards the anti-ghosting, I haven't used the full version of Photomatix, just the trial, but have had similar results using the automatic feature of Photoimpact's HDR routine. I do have the option, though, of manually masking out any part of the frames used in HDR, so in your example, I could pick one frame to show, and mask out the ducks from the others without affecting the rest of the picture. Likewise, can use the automatic registration, or do it manually. Don't like taking the time, usually, though.
