Default A terrifying and terrible sight

(a series of HDR images)

Imagine you are a Jewish father or mother in 1939 Poland. You look out of your 2nd floor window and see a huge vehicle coming down your street. Inside is a Nazi SS colonel, accompanied by helmeted troops.

The vehicle stops suddenly in front of your building. Commands are shouted and the troops quickly exit the vehicle and rush toward the building entrance.

Could anything be more frightening?

Mercedes Benz built 57 of these vehicles for Hitler and his top command staff in the mid- to late-1930s.

They were huge, heavily armored vehicles with 3 rows of seating.

This one is on display at the Lyon Air Museum located next to the John Wayne Airport here in Orange County, California. Well worth visiting.

BTW, these are all 3 bracketed photos shot hand-held. Processed in Photomatix Pro

Fantastic series and narration Walter. What a pity this magnificent piece of engineering from Mercedes Benz is connected to such an appalling time in our history.

I'm not even a Jew and already i'm terrified just imagining the situation.
Nice HDRs. Almost no shadows and even lighting.

Any idea what that thing is on the bar between the headlights in front of the grill?

Not sure, but it could be a light for driving during an air raid. Notice, also, the spotlights on either side of the windshield which appear to have the same purpose.
