I have been looking for a replacement for my much loved Aiptek IS-DV that I lost and was even looking at the Sanyo Xacti range. While they certainly seem to be the best of their type, I don't really feel the best part of $500 can be justified on one of these as I can get a good miniDV for that although the Xacti C40 @ $349 might still be a possibility. I used it to film video clips of my 10 month old son to send to relatives etc. It was especially useful at the beach since dropping a $100 device in that harsh environment isn't as big a loss as a $500 one! No I didn't lose my IS-DV on the beach but on the way home from work. The first time I have ever lost a device and it will forever remain a mystery as to how I managed it but I digress.
After reading these forums and doing some research, I noticed that Amazon.com seem to have the IS-DV2 for sale which @ $119 certainly has caught my attention especially as it now seems to have included 2 LED video lights similar to those you find on the compact miniDV camcorder. Even without those the price is cheaper than the old IS-DV in Target! How come there is no mention of it on the USA site yet Amazon already has it ready to order? I can even place it in my cart, but I don't want to order it, if it's a preorder that's going to have an indefinate delivery date. Also anyone care to enlighten me as to what the Sanyo Xacti C40 @ $349 would offer me that would make it worth nearly 3 times the price? I know it has a CCD and autofocus lens but I am not totally convinced that they are worth paying 3 times the price when my IS-DV did what I needed it for but then I am quite willing to be convinced LOL |

I see what you mean about the screen on the IS-DV2 not swivelling. I never noticed that in my excitment. I do notice that its sister camera, the PocketDV T300, on the Taiwan website does have a swiveling LCD. There always seems to be a flaw in an otherwise tempting camera... Hmmm
They should've improved on the IS-DV design instead. I wonder if you can buy the PocketDV T300 here in the USA. I haven't even seen it on ebay so I guess not. |

So in your opinion, what do you consider the current cream of the crop among the cheap <$200 hybrid camcorders?

when I had Purchased istuck with HSN.com and gotten a Mustek.
Mustek 9300 aiptek mpvr andispan 920 were the talk of the town mustek 9300 has have no complaints or a ton of members stating claim. as Our top member Olldhacer will tell you no complaints on his after he finall found a good model. others love their Ispan 920's claim it is a better camera but is popping up with questions, this also holds true to the Aiptek MPVr which has the aud/vid synch at the top of the list , and being justified by the firmware correction so makinga choice of which is preferred is an open topic and I preferre to look into the newer one Aiptek zoom-dv6 within a few weeks time of its release again I mentioned Mustek dv4500 and purchased 2 more . due to my situation. never like to recommend but review , find and decide. |

Purchased IS-DV2 @ TARGET for $119 because I needed something right now. Still in packaging but I thought I would let you know where to find it. Have read a review on Amazon re its quality, which seems a bit depressing but probably the best to expect for $120.

That review was posted by me. I didn't think it was depressing as I did say it had very good video and I gave it 4 stars :-)
As to video and stills quality you should've looked here as I posted links to a bunch of images and 2 test videos: http://www.stevesforums.com/forums/v...62&forum_id=92 I don't think you will be dissapointed in the video quality. The still Images are decent although not great, which is expected in these devices, but then you have to remember the comparison is with current cheap digital cameras. It wasn't that long ago that the still image quality in these devices now would've blown away most cheap cameras in the past. My main gripe was the LED video light. I will be interested in your feedback as to whether yours gives the same results. I wasn't expecting miracles but it should've worked at least a little better than it did to be useful at all. If you ignore the video light and the low light capability which affects ALL of these type of camcorders then the device is actually not bad. I just think it could've been better, but then don't we all? I am still looking for a camcorder myself. The problem I have is that I want a good quality device to record my son's parties etc. yet I know a miniDV won't get used much outside of these due to hassle of tapes where as I found I would tend to take my IS-DV with me everywhere. I may yet get the Sanyo but am waiting for the end of July to see if Aiptek release their autofocusing model which will be significantly cheaper than the Sanyo @ the $199 I have seen it listed for. |
