Probably a good idea. Good thing I kept all of the packaging.

I was kind of pissed. Not because it was broken, but because I'd have to go through the tedious and LONG exchange process online.

I remember one time on NewEgg I had to return a video card, and NewEgg basically said "ship it to this address and we'll tell you if it qualifies."

I got on Amazon.com and began the return process. It asked WHY I wanted to return it, and my options were something like:

* I don't like it anymore
* I ordered the wrong thing
* Fraudulent purchase
* Defective product

So I tick the box and click next and to my surprise it said that Amazon would cover the shipping. Hell, even with NewEgg (who I love), I have always had to pay shipping to return a product. Amazon just provided me with a UPS label to print and my choice of dropping it off or having it picked up.

It said that it takes 7-14 business days to process a return, so I did the math in my head...

3-5 days shipping back to Amazon
7-14 days AT Amazon
3-5 days shipping back FROM Amazon
_____

13-24 business days it looks like I'll be waiting.

THEN, out of the blue, I receive another email from Amazon...

"Thanks for contacting us at Amazon.com.

I am sorry to hear about the problem you experienced with your
shipment.

I have placed a new order for the item with faster shipping method.
There is no charge for this replacement.

Here are the details of the new order:
Order Number : XXX-XXXXXX-XXXX
Shipping Speed : One-Day Shipping
Estimated Delivery Date: June 21, 2007

Once you have received the replacement and verified that everything
in the set is in acceptable condition, please ship back the set
containing the defective item.

We must receive the item from your original shipment within 30 days
from the date of this e-mail. If the item being replaced was part
of a set, please return the entire set.

NOTE: If we do not receive the item by then, we will charge the
credit card associated with this order for the cost of the item. If
you would prefer to pay using a different method (excluding gift
certificates) please contact us."

So basically they just overnighted me a brand new camera for free, just on trust that I don't cancel my credit card and keep both. Once the new one comes in, I just make sure it works, and ship back the broken one at my leisure. All for free. I love Amazon for this.:blah:

Yes I have always found amazon.com to be excellent on returns. When I bought my Minolta Dimage camera three years ago, I had the bad luck of getting a faulty one twice and they let me exchange it each time relatively quickly and painlessly. My Dimage has since then performed faithfully ever since In fact it has outlasted the Digital camera division of Minolta which no longer exists since they pulled out.

Unless an item is significantly cheaper, I tend to always go with amazon.com. Of course you have to be careful that you don't find it TOO cheap as the saying "too good to be true, it probably is comes into effect". A lot of those places are well known scam sites.

I generally use newegg.com for memory cards though since it's rare they are beat on price although I have bought more expensive stuff from them like my international maha battery charger for instance. With 1GB memory cards under $10 now, it is not worth returning if faulty due to postage costs, but luckily I have only had one item that was faulty in all the stuff I have bought from them.

I do agree though, that is the one disadvantage of buying online is that returns can be a hassle, and that's not to mention the additional hassle of taking it to your local UPS, fedex whatever.

Still, you can't complain, at least you get the option to return it. Be far more of a problem if you couldn't now wouldn't it? :lol:

Back on topic.

So is the general consensus so far on this camera from those who bought it that this really is a bargain HD camera (given its faults)?

I am sure that the use it is put to, will affect how people view this device.

If you are intending it to be a cheaper version of the more mainstream (and more expensive) HD devices then I am sure it will disappoint although probably more due to lack of controls rather than image quality.

On the other hand, for those of you who intend to use this for general fun use ie kids and family, then to me, it looks like it should be plenty good enough.

After all I have used my MPVR with my son etc. and it's made quite decent Video CD's yet the image quality of the GO-HD blows it out of the water.

I have a DVD player that plays HD-DIVX and WMV-HD files. Has anyone converted the output of the GO-HD to one of those formats? I tried to use Dr. DIVX to convert some sample MOV files that I downloaded, but it either locked up or gave me a file with messed-up audio.
