I'm posting this here just so it's documented in case anyone else runs into the issue.

My A-HD ran fine for 4 days using a (slow) 4GB Kingmax SD card (not SDHC). I was very happy that the Aiptek easily used this card, as my I bought it for another camera that didn't support 4GB.

Yesterday, I was recording, and the camera suddenly switched to Internal memory. It did not detect the SD card anymore.

- I reseated the card - nothing
- pulled the battery for 15 minutes - nothing
- inserted another 1GB card - worked fine
- put the 4GB card back in - nothing

I put the 4GB card in two differnt computers. Each one detected that is was new and asked if i wanted to format it. This card had at least 40 photos and 20 minutes of HD video. FIle restore software also confirmed it was now blank.

This wasn't a big deal, as I DON'T do critical taping on this camera, and NEVER do critical taping on a new camera (want a break-in period).

- I formatted the 4GB card and reinserted - nothing
- I couldn't even format in camera as it didn't detect the card at all.
- The card did work fine now in my PCs.

After some research, I found the following info which may be helpful (but not necessariliy accurate.

Long story short, I used this utility from Panasonic (works on all SD cards) to low-level format my SD. It worked in the A-HD fine after that (over an hour recorded so far).

http://panasonic.jp/support/global/c...formatter.html

Possible reasons for the failure: I read an forum post that stated that 4gb SD and SDHC cards that are older used a non-spec to achieve 4GB at FAT32.

So the moral of the story: don't be quick to judge the camera. There's a whole lot more to the story. I really want to keep using my 4gb card, so I'm goning to run the hell out of it for awhile and see what happens.

You may have a faulty card...

An update on my above post: Even though the low-level format works for me each time, I've had to do it multiple times, and lost much video footage each time the card ceased "detecting" in my A-HD. I think my card is faulty too....

I'll let you know if I find another tool, but if a low-level format doesn't work..... hmmmm

Thank you! I had my first sd card problem yesterday (it happened right after I started taking digital photos with the A-HD) all of a sudden I got the dreaded 'internal memory' icon and the camera stopped recording. Anyway, I downloaded the formatter program you posted and the card was working again in a matter of seconds.

From now on I'm carrying and extra SD card, just in case...

Master Shake: what was the brand and size (or model #) of the card that failed. we may need to start tracking these and let Aiptek know (just in case the cards aren't at fault).

It's a really cheap 1GB card from IMPACT (???) that I bought at Walmart for like $10 a couple years ago. So it might actually be the card... but I never had trouble with it before.

Same with my 4GB card (Kingmax). Didn't have issues until it went to the Aiptek. Of course, the Aiptek is the first device I used with it that requires constant writing (video).

Here's some info I found on IMPACT......

I think I'll stay away from them, and Kingmax.
