The Screen Shot: The 178 is small, while the 188 is larger very easy on the eyes.

The HDV-178, or 188 Body, Depending on your needs, the HDV-177 has a rugid feel to it, with a solid HDMI door. Battery door may become loose if handled incorrectly, finger prints on the lens and hand covering flashare common issues on compact models. Macro/infinity switch will losen or switch when removed from pockets. 188 HDMI door mahy become loose and incorrectly designed. Battery door a more solid design while the button lay out will fit a larger hand. A smoother body, and more finger prints shown macro/infinity switch will loosen and incorrectly set from a pocket, while large hands will cover flash on both. it is the Persons decision which hybrid body style is right for them.

First clip is always important.

1. Low light and macro/infinity. these are four clips 80 meg in a zip file marked 178 188 macro, macro light, reg light, reg cartoon. You'll need as mentioned above wmp 10 or higher , or other means of playing them. You may view and comment good or bad. On the clips you'll see Noise, glare, bluriness, and vividness, you may notice the Cmos sensor are just a tad different. What you will not see will be the screens of the camera, the 178 shows a better picture brighter, see picture below

Observations:

178 video LCD screen shows a Brighter Video display

188 video LCD screen shows a bright video display

look for future information to be added thank you

The 178 model has a 3m self adhesive ring that will pry off, with a tab at either 3 or 9 o'clock position for the sensor lens protection.

My conclusion:

Owning both Models. Iam very impressed by the 178's size, and durability, with a fully creversed, and folded screen. Modifying the macfro/infinity switch with a small tab inside the inner part of the switch gets me perfect video always when lifted out of the shirt or pants pockets. It is best t okeep the camera in a pouch, or bag for extral protection, I have absolutely no complaints on this model, and can recommend this t oanyone.

Owning the 188 I am super impressed with the size, and screen the eligance and looks, adifferent screen fold, but lacks the ability to go around a full 270 degree and fold reversed into the device. the screen lays further back creating a different hand hold. Having a Wider angle and more video and picture it is best to makesure your hand hold does not get in the sensors way . Picture mode is great watcing hte picslide rather see a hour glass is different. larger fonts over the 178. Louder andstronger speaker over the 178 will deffently be an improvement for 50.00 extra. low light for lcd ,and in video are the downside. I have a few complaints and can recommend it.

These are my observations while using both models.

178 small compact rugid body 188 eligant and smooth black body

177 small speaker normal sound 188 large speaker very loud sound

177 small fonts 188 large font

177 still snap hour glass188 pic slides after shot

177 sensora better lightlevel188almost as equil if not less

188 wide anglenormal 188 a wider angle lens

these comparisons are of my observation and may differ from other users.

Do any of those video clips have a rolling shutter test?

If so, which one?

If not, could you record a video with the 178 & 188, like the one you did with the Aiptek A-HD+?

I'm talking about the one with the spinning tire iron. That was a cool video.

Either camcorder would be fine. Whenever you get a chance is cool.

I also downloaded the raw footage from Megaupload of the Aiptek A-HD+

It's funny how those camcorders with a CMOS sensor when recording at 30fps makes the tire iron look like rubber.

60fps looks pretty good. The rolling shutter isn't too noticeable like that.

Can anyone tell me if the Jazz 178 can record video while the viewfinder is in the closed position?

It can record in a closed like configuration. but you have to fold it back in a reversed way with the LCD screen facing outwards.

Darn. I was hoping it would record without the screen showing. I'm thinking of buying one to mount on a helmet.

Just picked up a Jazz 178 from Wally World for $96.15. Got to love the fact
that my wife works there and I get a discount card to. Only 10% but it sure
helps. Going to be using this little HD camera on my RC planes. My old Aiptek
A-HD bit the dust in a crash onto a frozen lake back in January. RC plane was
easilt repaired but the aiptek was totalled.

This little jazz is far smaller then the my Aiptek A-HD to. Just hope that it will
record video as well. Have it on the charger right now and it should be ready
by tonight to test out. Hopefully the weather will cooperate.
