i needed to return my Aiptek Action HD to walmart because the auto-focus failed after one day. my intent was to get a replacement but walmart didn't have any in stock so i got a refund.

does anyone have the sense that the Action HD has more manufacturing defects than other Aiptek models?

i'm still thinking of getting another Action HD, but i am open to buying a different, more reliable, and better designed Aiptek model. there's a lot i like about the Action HD, but here's my list of concerns in the hope that another Aiptek may have fewer of these problems:

deficiencies i associate with the Action HD:
- non-flashable firmware
- inability to keep the unit charged while in use
- poor quality audio recording via mic (background hiss)
- no manual focus
- loss of focus while zooming
- continuous adjustment of auto-focus when unnecessary

any suggestions?

this is probably my biggest concern with the Action HD.

this prevents bugs from being easily fixed.

what's the most recently released Aiptek cam that can have it's firmware flashed by the end-user?

Most reliable Aiptek model could be perhaps all models which doesn't have autofocus and doesn't have zoom. You could use external audio recorder for sound, but otherwise there isn't nothing much you can do about it.
