Well, the news is all over the video world about Canon's amazing new EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR.

The link above goes to the video on the Canon Web site that was directed by Vincent Laforet.

I suspect this is going to be a revolutionary new camera and although it's not an economy hybrid, it shows how great the low-light capabilities can be with this new breed of high-end photo/video hybrid.

Yes you can expect to buy several budget hybrids for the price of this and still have enough left over for a short vacation!

SLR's generally aren't capable of video but it seems that is changing. They have always been good in low light thanks to the size of the lens and sensors. Even with high MP they are still much less crowded than a compact camera.

That Canon page is full of stuff it wants to install on your browser.

All I want is the video, none of the Yahoo toolbar stuff, please.

I didn't see any "toolbar" stuff, either.

By the way, this SLR camera includes an external microphone input.

B & H is selling it for $2,700.

Darn.

I spent that much on a crummy JVC JY-HD10 720p HDV tape-based camcorder back in 2004.

Yep.

Lens or "lenses" are extra.

This year's large-CCD cameras (Kodak v1073 1/1.8" for example) have a sensitivity which outperforms any of the hybrids by a wide margin.

Next years appear to have even more low-light sensitivity. Fuji just announced the Super CCD EXR for a mid range camera in 'Spring 2009.' You can see the PDF of the technology release at
http://www.fujifilm.com/photokina200...er_ccd_exr.pdf
and the press release is at

For those of us that find the EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR to be a little out of our league in price, it looks like Canon has another one up their sleeve that's a little more in our price range:

http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/17/c...s-full-hd-too/

For some reason they think it will be $900 on endgagdet.com, but the opinion I have read elsewhere is that they believe it's more likely to be $599 considering the non HD version, the Sx10 is listed at $399. In the UK where the SX1 has already been released, the price difference would also suggest a $599 price.

I noticed that Canon are finally using h264 as well.
