Hi, What are the benefits of HD video cameras? do videos only look better on an HD TV or does the quality improve even if you are viewing your vids on a CTR monitor.

Do they improve the qualityfor peopleviewing them on YouTube etc

Believe it or not, it depends.

There are standard definition camcorders -- I'm talking specifically about the models that cost almost $20,000 -- with great big 2/3" CCDs that record video that is so sharp, detailed and beautiful it would still look better than the HD video recorded by a Taiwanese/Chinese "plastic-corder."

On other hand, the hybrids probably shoot video good enough to compete favorably against typical low-end consumer MiniDV camcorders.

The HD video would, of course, display at full resolution on a HDTV.

On a standard definition CRT monitor, the HD video would have to be scaled down, but it should still look quite good because you're starting with a high resolution source. The HD video should look as good or better than a typical, low-end consumer MiniDV camcorder's video.

There are all kinds of different factors that can vary, however, so it's not always easy to make generalizations.

For YouTube, I'd go with an HD hybrid over a MiniDV camcorder.

Yes all depends what you want. I started out with 320x240 highestsetting and still used the lowest 120x240. ifyou expnad pass a thumbnail it is all Blocky. even though I have theclips they are priceless to me my vacation, and on film I can always view, than having none. I then worked my way up.

When you watch ona television you'll be very dissappointed with all models of standard, and want to use HD you want minimum distortion, we cannot afford a Imax camera but at least we can afford Aiptek.

Even if you are currently only going to show them on a low definition view such as a TV or youtube etc. you should still shoot HD if you plan to keep the videos. Technology moves on and while HD TV's may still be a luxury today, tomorrow they will be common place and you will already have your videos in HD.

Storage space shouldn't be a concern as harddrives are very cheap and with the sizes available today should take a while to fill unless you are very profilic.
