Ordered an Action HD-GVS on Thanksgiving Thursday from Walgreens (~$220 total) and got it yesterday (Tuesday 12/2 - Costa Mesa, CA - about 2 miles from Aiptek Irvine office)

From what I've played with it, it's pretty nice - few things to note (will update as I learn more):
  • Very smooth, crisp video, but still need adequate light, else things look slightly blue tinted[/*]
  • Very light, but doesn't feel cheap[/*]
  • Stabilization only works when on VGA and 720p/60fps mode[/*]
  • Comes with: 1200mh battery, AC charger, mini-tripod, tiny remote (with battery), composite A/V cable, component HD video cable, carry bag, tether attachable lens cap, manuals / software, but NO USB cable (apparently it should have one, and I was shafted :/)
    [/*]
  • AF lock with one click[/*]
  • Resolution / macro button might be too easy to press accidentally since they are all on the Joystick
    [/*]
  • Has dedicated voice recorder function[/*]
  • Picture focus lock reticle is nice, but does not show final exposure before taking the picture
    [/*]
  • Huge multicolor LED on top
    [/*]
  • Jack cover for I/O is ridiculously hard to pry off since it's plastic and doesn't bend (had to use a knife), but separate external mic jack cover is nicely rubberized[/*]
  • Camera can get confused sometimes as to if it is on or off when disconnecting from PC USB, requiring a battery eject.
    [/*]
My first post, just thought I'd ring in since I browse a lot. Excuse the crappy iPhone pic, enjoy!

It looks like a nice camcorder, but
I am extremely -- EXTREMELY -- curious
about how well the external microphone
input would work with a reasonably high
quality external microphone.

Thanks for posting the preliminary
information.

If you get an opportunity to test that
external microphone input, let us know
how well it performs.

Thanks.

Unfortunately I don't have a high quality non XLR external mic I can use with the min jack.

I tried using a stereo line source for recording and that works (RCA > 3.5 minijack), but at line level the signal is clipped a lot, even at super low volumes (which is expected).

Had some OK results connecting it to a standard PC VOIP headset mono 3.5mm mic, which sounds fine (like a cheapy ones normally do), but it was worse than the onboard stereo mics, which are pretty good actually.

Note: there is also a very slight, but noticible bleed in of the onboard mic signal EVEN when you have an external mic plogged in. Hope that helps!

Added pic of box contents (excluding cam and lens cap ):

Darn; if there's bleeding of the signal from the onboard microphone when an external microphone is utilized, then that would be a deal breaker for me.

first of all, would like to thank fishycomics for providing lots of info on these hybrids 'cheap' cams . been reading threads of forums, mostly regarding aiptek action hd and jazz elite hdv178that lead me to purchase both over the sanyo vpc-hd100(returned for action hd)and hdv188. lots of helpfull info thanks to fishy!

question for both e3l and fishy;

is the gvs better in many ways compared to the action hd?
are the video resolutions the same as the action hd?
does the gvs also have the d1 @ 60fps?
are the batteries the same(np60)?
can anyone post the manual online pls?

just bought my action hd in exchange from the sanyo vpchd100, wondering if the gvs is really a better choice, again thanks to fishy, available at walgreens.com?

appreciate any help.

Quick question about the battery. You mentioned ejecting it. When I went to Aiptek's website the GVS model is not listed on the replacement battery page.

Can the camera be powered via USB? If so then I can get an external USB li-ion battery pack that can power the ipods and cell phones in a pinch as well.

Generally I like to have at least 1 spare battery and numerous media replacements to keep filming the kiddos. Getting SDHC media cards is easy its the battery that is my sticking point for the sale.

PS the 1200mAh battery is at what voltage?

PPS I bit the bullet Dec 9th is my arrival date.
