Today Ambarella released information on their new A5 platform for hybrid cameras in 2009.

The A5 platform consist of three products: A530, A550 and A570.

Some interesting points:

- 10 megapixel still images (true resolution?)
- Full HD video recording (1920x1080p ?)
- Dual resolution recording for fast internet sharing??
- Face detection for better autofocus
- A550 supports Broadcast format 1080i60
- 720p60 and 1080p30 video resolutions
- A570 is capable of capturing data at 320megapixel per second. Meaning can take 5.3 megapixel widescreen(16:9) still images at 60fps, while recording regular HD video(Am I getting this right, cuz I'm a bit confused?)
- Quote: "Ambarella expects that consumer hybrid cameras based on the A5 platform can be priced under the critical US $199 price threshold in 2009. "

Check out the press release for more info.

I understand that "dual recording" feature to mean one can record at *both* high and low resolutions *simultaneously.* Two streams, in other words, would be recorded at the same time. Interesting.

They finally got to announcing this thing. I am disappointed that it does not do 1080p60. I suspect another chip this year or next to do that. So the Aiptek camera in April might not be 1080p60.

Notice that it can access 60 fps at 5.3 mpixel )please drop the sub 3840 horizontal sensors.). Maybe ther is hope of slow mo, and sensors like Sony's 6mpixel.

Greetings:

Looks like this a good time for a group of us to get a sample of this

HD A5 platform and create a prototype camcorder.

If the camcorder we create is good enough we can begin production

and sell them as group.

Bugger getting a sample, I am thinking of approaching them directly to create my new camera platform for sale. But still go ahead and do what you want, I might be able to advise you on parts. Given that they can now record 5.3mp at 60fps, you can probably record that and in effect get something like the Elphel 353 camera project cheap (and maybe even finish before they do). You in effect get something like this for a lot less (except for the cost of the storage array):

(looks like there are no descent images at this time).

Go and see the micron sensor company (Aptina or something like that), they do development platforms with sensor.
