once you convert it to DVD all the HD is lost so buying a HD camera might be a waste of money. How is this project going to be displayed?
Actually not a waste of money at all. Sure you won't be displaying it in HD NOW. but in the future when you have better equipment you'll be able to rework your archived video. Remember you cannot retake an event in higher quality but you can always reduce quality for current needs.

RGVCAM: when you say convert back to the orginal, that means using any editor converter or total.?
I guess as long as the editor you use, outputs in the same format and you can tweak the parameters, then you should be able to. Of course we all know how fussy some devices can be. For instance my Insignia MP3 player has ARCSoft conversion software and can use either DIVX or Windows Media. If you try and use Windows media encoder with the same settings, you'll find at first it won't recognize the video and I wondered why until I worked out it needed the SIMPLE encoding profile.

The project will be presented by using a projecter but it will be available for download, too. My PC has a Firewire Port and, as I said, a AMD 64 3000+ CPU
