Alright. I'm back. I'm still lost. FFDShow didn't seem to help.

I don't know what to do. I tried using Sony Movie Studio HD, and this will open the videos perfectly, but now there's no sound. I'm about ready to call Vivitar up and find out what's wrong with this thing... it shouldn't be this difficult to simply open video files for editing.

Is there such a thing as an automatic codec configuration tool or something like that? I'm just lost. I don't know where to go with this.

No. A friend of mine on YouTube has an 840XHD, and its microphone has no bass response at all (very tinny sound), and distorts easily on loud sounds.

Get a Kodak Zi8, a $5 Hong Kong "Sony" stereo microphone, and a right-angle adapter from Radio Shack, and you will be much happier with the sound quality -- for less money, too.
