Default Z700 Video Input!!!

Hi guys,

Maybe it's something you guys already know but I haven't read about it on the forums anywhere but uhm...my Z700 has got a video input!

I just checked the Aiptek website to make sure I wasn't trippin' and this would be a regular feature for all Z700 camera's.

I've only had my camera for a week or two and this morning on my way to work (on the train) I plugged in my headset that I always have with me in my bag. As I did this a menu popped up asking me to select: headset, AVout, AVin. I tried headset at first and that gave me audio output just like it should. Then I figured I should try it again but this time selecting AVin. So I unplugged the headset and plugged it back in. When I selected AVin it gave me a black screen and the message: "NO SIGNAL!".

When I came home tonight I immediately looked up the box my Z700 came in and took out the AV cable that I hadn't even used until now. I hooked the cables up to my sattelite receiver, plugged it into the Z700 and selected AVin.....and presto! The TV image appeared on the little screen. By pressing the record button I am able to record the video/audio.

Have you guys ever come across this?

I updated my firmware to the latest Z700 2703 firmware. I'm not sure if the cam already had the video-in feature before I upgraded (from 2201!).

I did note all info about my recorder before and after I flashed the new firmware. Maybe it will be of any help to you guys. My Z700 is a "brandless" Aiptek. So it doesn't have a brand name printed on it but it does have the orange yin yang symbol. I think it's an asian version, although it did come with a US charger and a European adapter. The box is mostly printed with asian symbols (different languages). The Z700 is all black and the flash is oriented vertically.

Hey Fishy,

Have you tried this on a US model, using the Z700 2703 firmware?
Don't you think it's a bit strange my cam had the 2201 firmware with this production date?

For the hell of it:
I went and grabbed the FW from my email, and it stated 2702, while it's correctly called 2703. It seems the model you have is of what you say it is.

that the firmware will not add AV input, but hardware, do not hold my word to it, but I do not pull ones leg here,
not responding, or holding info etc.

Not sure if all models have this but not sure why.

Where's m dumb look icon

Hi Crihz,

That's a great find. I don't know about the GVS(US model) but the european AHD Z700 definantly will not have this function. Reason is the EU tax laws concerning electronics. So this function will most definantly be disabled/excluded.

At what resolution does your "asian" Z700 record in? 720x480? 640x480?

It recorded a PAL source at: 768x576 (according to quicktime) or 720x576 (according to windows)

I know about the tax laws. I've had the same problem with a Sony PC3E. They had even blocked the firewire input. Luckily I was able to correct that by creating a simple serial cable to correct the problem.

I'm 100% sure this must be the same for these camcorders. Why would you make so many different motherboard revisions when you can easily switch things on and off through BIOS or firmware settings?

A little addition to the above post, here's a sample video (.mov) that I recorded from my sattelite receiver: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WN67729U
