I'm thinking about getting either the HD720P DVR-007 or the DOD F500HD.

My only issue with the DOD is that the view doesn't look wide enough. All of my close calls on the roads so far has been idiots pulling out of junctions or straight onto roundabouts without looking. I think this camera with the default lens could well miss it.
I've looked on the DOD website and I've found that they do have an optional "wide conversion lens" available; does anyone know what it's like with the lens conversion fitted?
I can't find any sample videos anywhere and I need to know if it distorts the image much.

What do you think of it:

All I need is a construction crane. Specs show 2.0mm 105 degree lens.
WP - I'm very interested to see how that lens attaches, and what affect it has on clarity. How much was it w/shipping?

I'm still waiting for the lens and the other camera to arrive.

There is a ring around the lens where I think the wide angle lens will just push on and hopefully stay put with a nice tight fit.

I'll post video once I have it. I'll have two F500HD's (one with wide angle, one without) and one VR-H1 (even wider) so I'll be able to video the same scene. I also have one of those oval shaped 640x480 cams that you see on ebay. It works great with wide lens but too bad the resolution isn't higher.

I agree with the comment before that it's very important to record as wide a view as possible when driving around.

Nice! I look forward to seeing those videos.

How much did the F500HD with the conversion lens cost?
And how much was the VR-H1?

I contacted DOD with some questions on Saturday and still haven't received a reply. How did you contact them?

I found some more information about the VR-01 camera here:
http://chintaho.12.usa.feidc.com/cct...n_VR-01M-M.pdf

It certainly sounds very promising, and apparently it can read numberplates clearly even with the 2mm wide angle lens.
Another good thing is that it's smaller than the F500HD and it's made out of aluminium, so it should have better build quality.

I've also managed to find a video of the F200HD with the 0.67 wide conversion lens fitted. It certainly makes quite a big difference. Despite the fact that the video was only shot at 1280x720 you can still read the numberplates of cars.

DOD replied to my email within a couple of days.
Probably Gloria will provide you with pricing, shipping charges...

I am still waiting for my parcel but this sure looks like the same wide angle lens that DOD shows:

It's advertised to fit a whole bunch of devices.

if so and you say both are the same then it is said

you are placing a metal ring in the MIDDLE of the lens not outer edges.
