I just recently acquired a PNY 64GB sd card and the Zi8 doesn't seem to read it. When I turn it on, the menu for recording speed is on but the camera does nothing else. It just freezes. To turn it off, I have to remove the battery. I don't know why this is happening.

Any ideas?

Of the many people who own, I am sure he 64gb card is double the size needed, I try at least half the size first.

Most older technologies will take max of 32 GB. I would not use 32 either because it will take more than a few seconds to boot up. 8GB is more than enough. make sure you are using class 10, minimum class 8.
