Unless the lower pixel count makes this much better than the iPhone in indoor lighting, I'd have to be cynical and assume that this is another Apple marketing trick to stop too many people 'on the fence' from getting one of these instead of an iPhone.

While I'd prefer them to have 'quality' pixels over 'quantity', at least 2MP would've been at least acceptable, but it seems, as the article states, this was meant only for video (like the nano). In fact it's worse than that. I mean you may as well not even bother and just do some frame grabbing later for some slightly higher resolution stills.

I guess, when buying this, one should look at it as a Pocket Computer/Games Console first and that just happens to have a HD camcorder function.

So this confirms the "rear-facing" camera is the high-definition, 720p video camera and, unfortunately, this "rear-facing" camera is also the one that shoots 960 x 720 still photos.

The "front" facing camera records VGA (640 x 480) photos and videos.

Until something comes along to disprove this, I'm going to assume it's accurate.

The photo portion of the camera seems a bit disappointing, but we'll see.

An interesting review by MACWORLD:

This review compares the very different video cameras in the iPod "TOUCH" and the iPhone 4.

i guess they had to keep costs down and had to keep it from cutting into the iPhone 4 too much, but it seems like they went too far on the camera, that is pretty bad, they could have at least went with a 3mp still image similar to their last generation iPhone. The camera on the iPhone 4 is actually quite good for its intended purposes and the built in HDR actually works, better than the gimick i thought it would be. The imager on the iPhone4 does quite a bit better in video too it appears.

but still, looks like a nice little device that does a lot of things without requiring a contract. maybe we can see an "s" or deluxe model later down the road.
