Default Zoom Q3HD Now On Samson Web Site

Samson's Web site is now featuring ZOOM's latest camcorder known as the Q3HD:

http://samsontech.com/products/produ...fm?prodID=2062

This time, there is a "line input" jack that will accommodate an external microphone.

It looks pretty decent and has all of the features... 1080/30p and 720/60p and other choices.

I'd like to see one up close to check the overall build quality.

It can record 24-bit audio.

Will be available later this year, but no price has been announced yet.

It's nice that they added the external input jack, but the high/low/auto mic gain switch is still rather limiting. I have the regular Zoom Q3 and I have to use the "high" mode most of the time, because the "low" setting is way too quiet (it's only useful for VERY loud live music), and the "auto" setting has a very slow recovery time, so if there's a sudden loud sound, like a clap or cough, the audio will suddenly get very quiet and then take a very long time to return back to the normal level. The Kodak Zi8's fully adjustable mic gain setting is much more flexible (and would be even moreso if you could adjust it in the middle of recording a video!).

I guese one day Samson will realize that the zoom lens from even a cheap camera would make this into a half-decent product.

I note also the solid plate above the microphones, which is likely to color the sound.

Vwestlife,

I agree with you 100% about the microphone gain because it is precisely the problem I encountered with my purchase of the ZOOM H1 audio recorder, which I returned.

Zoom needs to have a look at how Olympus has handled gain:

1. High microphone sensitivity
2. Medium microphone sensitivity
3. Normal microphone sensitivity (for dictation)

I think a PZM external microphone such as the Crown Sound Grabber II might work well with the ZOOM devices, but I haven't tested this theory.

But your criticism is absolutely "spot on." I couldn't get the volume I needed with my Zoom H1.
