OK the Kodak Macro modes are ~15cm for the Zi8 (about 6")
and 7-17cm for the Zx5 (about 2.7-6.7")

Ever tried approaching a butterfly to within 6"?
if it didn't fly off -
it's dead.

The Zx5 has a very attractive focus range of 10cm (~4" to infinity) -
on paper - it depends on how well it maintains focus on what one wants to focus on.

I have only read complaints about focus hunting with the Zx5 -
but then I will also accept that people who are happy with the focusing probably would not be posting......

Personally unless I plan to shoot closer than 40" often -
I much prefer to know for certain that the camcorder will not focus hunt - and choose a fixed focus.

But if the specs sound attractive and one is seduced - then try it,
and see if the thing hunts .

Very cool Fishy -
1) great flying -
especially those parts where you catch the plane instead of landing it.

2) that butterfly was obviously alive -
but also pretty obviously not within 6" of the lens - however it may be about a foot or two from the lens - and seems to be still reasonably in focus.

But don't forget this is in pretty good light and I'm not too sure if the camcorder was capable of stopping the lens down to a smaller aperture -
if that is the case, then the depth of field is then extended a bit closer - eg: for f/8 from f/2.8 then it extends the DoF forward by about 50-70cm (~20-28") - so for a Zi8 that would be 12-20" to infinity would be in focus.......
