Default Samsung W200

Pocket HD cams may seem passe now with the advent of better quality cellphone video eg: the highly regarded iPhone 4S.

However one of the top rated pocket HD camcorder can be had for $49.72 including shipping -
water, shock and dust-proof - it is factory refurbished -
I just ordered one, as that price was just too tempting.
Review conclusions @ CamcorderInfo.com

I'm concerned about appearing to "advertize" - so this can be found by
doing a google on Samsung W200 techforless and in the right panel is the unit for $49.72.
(or click on the shopping link on the left panel)
the ad says it is today only and limited to stock on hand.

Hope that helps someone.

I'm surprised - I just tried the google search -
yesterday it was back up to about $72 -
but now it appears to be available at $49.72 again.

Surprisingly, the W200 held off the other camcorders in its price range by putting up excellent results in the majority of our video tests. Most impressive was the W200’s ability to capture sharp video in bright light—sharper than any other budget camcorder we tested in the past year. We were also happy to find the camcorder producing accurate colors in all kinds of light, which is something we rarely see with ultracompact models.
...
The Samsung HMX-W200 is a great example of a camcorder that wildly exceeded our expectations. We expected average results from the camcorder, but instead we got a video performance that rivals the best we’ve seen from a model that costs under $200.

Just received it yesterday - it is Samsung USA refurbished - but looked brand new.

I've run a battery and capacity test -
fully charged battery -
only have 8GB microSD card -
left W200 running in front of TV -
8GB card was full @ 2hr 6min using 720p/30fps
battery still showed one segment - according to the manual: "75~95% used".

So battery performance was good for at least 2 hours.
(est 2hr + 12 to 48 mins)

One behavior was strange - the record time recycled/reset itself every 20 mins - so I could not easily tell the total elapsed recording time.
However the remaining time/capacity counter seemed to be continuous - but I was not sure if it was doing this on the actual remaining microSD card capacity, or simply counting down from the initial estimated time.

I then discovered the reason for the 20min recycle/reset recording time -
The replay function on the W200 shows only one video file -
but there were 7x actual .MP4 files on the microSD card, and the limit was 19min 59.9-sec max - hence the recycling/resetting of the recording time at ~20mins. However even though I now understand why - I would have much preferred to have the total elapsed recording time showing.

The average bitrate for 720p/30fps was about 8Mb/s -
here's a Bitrate Viewer screenshot of the 4th MP4 file -

The $64,000 question -
It is waterproof -
I checked the two doors were clean round the rubber grommets and latched shut properly - set it on record and placed it in a washing up bowl full of water - probably only 7" depth of water - but for over 10mins - initially I was very concerned to see rising bubbles (leaks?) - especially from the hinge areas of the two doors - then the occasional bubble here and there.

However the W200 continued to record without any signs of distress - so I figured the bubbles were just pockets of air trapped in the hinge areas and elsewhere like the button recesses.

After over 10 mins in the water I removed the W200 and dabbed it with a towel - it was still working and the lens area showed no water ingress or fogging. Then turned it off, and because I could see water in the gaps around the doors (and I did not want to let water in by opening) - I let it air dry for just under 1 hour.

When I opened the doors I could not see any water ingress - so everything was OK and the W200 still worked fine both in record and playback.

However one should be aware there are "pockets" where air can be trapped -
so when entering water some bubble will rise - that may not be a reliable indicator of leaks.
After being in the water - those "pockets" can retain water - which means opening the doors could result in water ingress -
so some of the design do leave something to be desired.

So far so good (said the man passing each window -
falling down the Empire State Building)
I will run a 1080p capacity test later.

I've now done a capacity test at 1080p/30fps.
I only have a 8GB microSD card - it was filled after about 66mins.

This time the battery icon showed 3 segments remaining - according to the manual this is "25~50% used".

The recording time recycled/reset at 16mins - and there were 5x MP4 files 16min length Max.

Average bitrate was almost 16Mb/sec
