Default Any better cams like the Zi8? (audio input)

My favorite Hybrid camera from the heap I purchased was the Kodak Zi8. Audio input, nice sensor size...

I touched upon why the Zi8 was so awesome when I writing about the audio kit I lug along to events (link if anyone cares), and was wondering has
anything came out which is better? As far as I know, the Zi8 is discontinued on the kodak site so it would be difficult to buy a new one if I ever needed it.

It seemed to get so much right with it's good sensor size and audio input.

Has there been stuff made since by anyone to be better?

To be pie in the sky, wifi streaming or connectivity would make me run out and get something... Otherwise these days I'm using more traditional, bigger dslrs.

Yes , for me it is the IP4S (Iphone 4S) has a good number of Apps like Filmic, and you can plug in any ext mic you like. 3 plus hours of record time. does a great Job, like the Zi8, and if lucky, not many sharing their apps found, to do exactly what you want.

Today this site kinda has flipped. since Aiptek, and now Kodak fading away.

Agreed, the Kodak Zi8 was a great pocket HD camcorder.

I know you are aware of the two portable audio recorders that masquerade as camcorders -

Zoom Q3HD

Olympus LS-20M

from your own thread:
Olympus LS 20 Camcorder

would you consider either of those?

The Kodak Zi8 has been discontinued for some time now -
however it is still available - but sometimes at outrageous prices.

eBay lists quite a few on auction - and the completed sold prices seem reasonable with some <US$50.

Perhaps the thing to do is buy one at a low price, and keep it as a spare/backup?

although I am sure you are aware that the audio recording format of the Zi8 - although more than adequate - is not really HiFi - even using high quality mics - since it's 128k AAC -

Or just dub your quality sound recording to almost any pocket HD camcorder video -
in which case the necessity of external mic input may not be as critical?

The Samsung W200 is a nice pocket camcorder - with even better video than the Zi8,
although I am not sure why you feel the iPhone 4S video may not be up to snuff,
as it is very highly regarded see review at camcorderinfo.com: Apple iPhone 4S
another of their top picks is the Panasonic HX-WA2 although the form factor is different.

Just for completeness their review of Samsung HMX-W200

It is still my fav cam as well, just to add. My Mouse button is kinda wearing, so when I press it to change re it sometimes does not.

I will not replace it . but will always admire it, as it is an all time. Stickie

Sorry, missed/forgot about this one -
the next version - Kodak PlayTouch Zi10
actually has a mic input socket (which doubles as headphone).

EDIT to ADD -
Unfortunately the consensus opinion from reviews is that the Zi10 only gives mediocre video quality.

The Zi8 is the better.

The Zi10 or Playtouch has the external port, to listen to your playback OR connect any(most) mics, cannot work together recording, while listening (hint, hint) (what people wanted)

Thanks for confirmation.

I was a bit taken aback by the majority consensus of reviews that the PlayTouch Zi10 video quality was just mediocre.

After all it's using the same/similar 1/3.2 5Mp sensor as the Zx5 PlaySport that generally gets very good reviews.

As I (I) Like the better the Zi8, has more a Executive look, feel, and handel. Nothing beats an actual use of a manual cam, vs a touchscreen one.

Some of the features the ZI 10 has, wished was in the i8, the one I am referring to is Screen glare.

I can live with the defects or issues the cam has. Known has hissing or known as the constant sound issue with Firmware 1.0-1.03 a high pitch noise to be exact.

I wished Kodak would have not given up, was not the choice, the workers, just the CEO and chairmen. Kodak could have joined forces with other companies if it was that bad, but guess when you have a good thing going. either stock up,, have a spare, or just enjoy it and move on?

You and me both - I really liked the format versatility of the Kodaks -
being able to shoot 1080p/30, 720p/30 and /60; as well as 848x480.

The 848x480 may seem redundant in the day of HD -
but for making DVDs - which many still regard as high video quality -
one has to remember DVD NTSC max resolution is only 720x480.

So 848x480 is more than adequate for widescreen (16:9) DVDs -
where HD footage would show no advantage whatsoever -
obviously HD footage shown directly on HDTVs will be better -
but not when converted and burnt to standard DVDs

If and when we use the Cinema film look. I normally do not bother. Wecan always modify from the HD1080P video's.

Istill have the back sticker on my camera, how much I like it, Lol
