Default 16 bit vs. 8 bit using Digital ROC/SHO

I just got my 1st film scanner recently, a Minolta DiMage Scan Dual III. It produces great scans but my slides and negs are old and faded and need help. I really like the ASF's Digital ROC & Digital SHO photoshop plugins. Digital ROC miraculously restores color and Digital SHO wonderfully fixes over/underexposed images.

But these plugins only work in 8-bit mode. Here I have this cool new scanner that produces 16-bit files and the 2 must-use plugins are 8 bit only!

MY QUESTION IS: I know 16-bit is "better" but will there really be a detectable difference if I convert to 8-bit for editing pics in Photoshop after performing scans in the highest resolution 16 bit mode? What if I convert to to 8-bit, apply the filters, then switch back to 16-bit?
Thanks in advance for the help!
