I'm looking to buy a scanner simply for photos. Anyone with experience with the Epson Perfection 4490or any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I purchased the Epson Perfection 4490 in April 2006. I have used it primarily for slide scanning, some photo scanning and the occasional document scans. No problems, no complaints, no breakdowns. The scanning software is easy to use. I scanned tons of old slides (as in 2,500 +) and was quite happy with the results. The machine has some nice dust removal features that come in handy for slide work. I've been real happy as well with the results from scanning in photos. Since this is the first home scanner I've used, you can take my comments with a grain of salt - but I'm picky on image quality and would buy this machine again. Like anything electronic, I suppose the price/quality/features of other competitive units may have changed since '06, but this unit still sings in my book. Best of luck.
