Default Recommendations for 35 mm slide copying...

I've got 35mm slides to copy. Would you recommend an adapter for my F717 or a slide scanner? Which gets the best results. Thanks!

Default Slide copying

It depends on how fussy you are about quality.

Much the best results will be obtained with a dedicated filmscanner, but they're expensive. If you get one I recommend you use Vuescan (from www.hamrick.com) which is excellent software that outperforms most of the proprietary software that comes with scanners. 2700dpi is a typical resolution, giving a >10Mpixel image from 35mm, and more upmarket ones do 4000dpi.

An adapter for your camera may give good results, if one is available to fit, but will depend critically on lens quality. A good one will also be expensive.

If you can put up with relatively low quality (e.g., for small illustrations or low resolution web images), try using your slide projector to project a bright, small (e.g., 12x10") image on a white card, and photograph that with your digicam over the top of the projector's optical axis. The quality isn't brilliant, but it costs nothing.

If you do want to pursue the film scanner route have a look at the Minolta Scan Elite 5400. There's some details on http://www.warehouseexpress.com under Photographic > Scanners > Minolta.

I recently purchased an Epson 3170 to scan slides and film and have been very pleased with it.
It is not the fastest way but works well also priced decently at 200.00 US.
I just scanned 550 slides with it. About an hour per box of 20
