Default Removing clear foil protection strips from negatives

Hi, I am starting to scan in all my negatives (phew 28 years worth..). I have found some negatives that I had developed in the US, they have two clear foils protection strips glued to them, they are glued at the sides over the holes. They are pretty easy to pull off (and I assume I should take them off before scanning in the negatives), but they leave behind some glue residue, which I do not want inside my negative scanner.
Anyone hit the same problem?
I can get the residue off with Isopropyl alcohol, but it does tend to smear and I wanted to touch the negatives as little as possible.

Anyone have any tips for me how to do this?

Cheers Brian
