Default Do all printers take this long to print?

I have an average 2400x1200 Cannon S600 printer. I did a 3mp picture and glossy paper at 8x10 at the highest quality for everything. It took 16 minutes to print. Also, I've heard I should be printing at 300 dpi. It that setting the printer to 300, or reducing the quality of the picture and then printing? I dont feel I need a better printer. The pics are fine, just real slow. I use win XP and have the latest drivers and use adobe photo delux 4.
