Consumer Review of the Kodak Z-980

1 Attachment(s)
Folks-

Initially, there was a lot of interest in the new Kodak Z-980 camera. like the Pentax X-70, the Nikon P-90, the Kodak Z-980 camera is a 24X Optical Zoom camera, that unlike it competitors, actually has a hot shoe that accepts the Kodak P-20 External Flash making it a must more useful camera.

I purchased the camera and I have honestly been very impressed with the Kodak Z-980 camera and its image quality. No, let's be honest, it is not a DSLR replacement. It is another, but a very good super zoom camera.

I have attached a photo sample for you taken in Arizona's Monument Valley. Yes there they are those beautiful Kodak Colors.

Let's begin a little question and answer section here within this thread. If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer any question promptly.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Does it have lens threads to accept filters?

mtclimber Aug 21, 2009 9:29 PM

Hi Gary-

I am very sorry to say that the Kodak Z-980 camera, does not have filter threads. I personally think that was HUGE mistake. But that is the fact.

When you zoom your Z980 Sarah is it noisy ? The one I tried out at the store was
and seem to have focus problems when zooming.

Thanks for any info.

I found that to be true of the one I tried as well. My P-90 was the same and had a curious rattle coming from the lens barrel.

mtclimber Aug 22, 2009 11:39 AM

Good Morning James and Gary-

I just ran the Z-980 through its entire zoom range twice and I must say that it is no more noisy than any of the other super zoom cameras fro Nikon, Canon, Kodak, Panasonic, and Olympus, all of which I own.

Have a wonderful weekend. I hope that you are enjoying better weather. We are shrouded in dense fog along the Oregon Coast.

Sarah Joyce

jcotton55 Aug 22, 2009 12:01 PM

Ah, dense fog would be nice, here in central Texas it's been a 100+ for around
50 days !

I figure the Z980 as well as the V-1073 had been handled and abused by the
customers at the store. The V-1073 zoom button was stuck ! Still makes me
wonder about the build quality.

James-

I agree putting out demo cameras such as Fry's does in our local area, has to be the ultimate torture test any camera can experience. I always steer clear of Fry's "open box, demo cameras."

Read the professional reviews, that is a much more realistic way to research a new camera.

Sarah Joyce

jcotton55 Aug 22, 2009 5:27 PM

The "pro reviews" only tell me part of what I need to know. They never cover
the video features well enough and can't tell me how it feels in my hands.
I know a combo pic/video camera isn't important to a lot of people, but for
me it is and I will never buy a another camera that doesn't do both well.
The video users take tell me a lot, though there seems to be a lot of people
who can take bad video with cameras others get great video with.

If I can't find it localy to try and buy, I'll never own it. I never buy anything
without trying it out myself.

I just learned this valuable lesson, James. The only thing other vital thing one cannot tell from buying locally is battery life. But, there are so many variables that affect it that it's impossible to get an accurate figure on it.

Hello Sarah,
I am researching all of the cameras listed above, which you already own. If you could only afford to buy one of these super zooms, which one would you choose? Presently I own three Kodak Easy Share cameras: my retired DX 6490, my trusty Z612, and my tiny V1073. Should I switch to Nikon or Canon? Or stay with Kodak and the new Z980? I've noticed that the price has increased on the Z980 in the past two weeks... does this mean it is becoming more popular and has overcome its unfavorable reviews? This morning on Amazon the price is $412.28! Thanks for your help... I value your opinion after reading many of your posts!
Best wishes, Meezer

mtclimber Aug 25, 2009 11:13 AM

Meezer-

Yes, in my opinion, the Kodak Z-980 is the camera of choice among the 24X optical zoom cameras on the market today because of the Kodak Color and the hot shoe for the P-20 external flash.

If you have done some research, you would find out that the following cameras were all produced in a single Chinese factory:

Kodak Z-980
Panasonic P-90
Penta X-70

Those cameras all share the same exact lens and very similar features. For me, at least, and I own a whole lot of super zoom cameras, the Z-980 comes first, followed by, the Olympus SP-590, and the Nikon P-90. The best super zoom in the last 5 years was unquestionably, the Sony H-2, but it is only 12X optical zoom.

Have a great day.

Thanks for sharing your opinion about the Z980. I like the RAW and live histogram features as well as the gorgeous Kodak color. I have a few more questions if that's OK.
*Why do you suppose the price has increased for this camera?
*Do you find the latch for the battery compartment to be a problem?
*Have you used the "document" scene setting? (I do genealogy research and think this might be very useful.)
Below is a picture that illustrates that Kodak color.... hope you like it!
Best, Meezer
PS I think you have the best job ever....

mtclimber Aug 25, 2009 5:46 PM

meezer-

Yes, I have used the Document Scene Mode on the Z-980 and it does a great job. the Z-980 is a master at macro/close-ups.The latch on the battery compartment is no big deal. I have never had a problem with it at all. i think that the small price increase happened due to a lack of inventory, which should be cured in a couple of weeks.

If you would like, you can have our job. After being "on the road" for 10 to 11 months every year for the last 14 years on cruise ships (606 total cruises!), we have decided to take a break. I just was re-hired today by our local Community College to start teaching digital cameras and software beginning in January 2010. I will also be doing some course for our State University as well. It will be fun to be back in the class room again, and after writing 7 books, there is another that we have already started.

Have a great day.

from Japan.

Hello Sarah.

I'm sorry for my poor English.

I'm very interested in Z980. But, I can't ascertained the technology and quality of Kodak.Because Kodak left a Japan market. (It is a big loss for me.) I can only look for the photo shot by someone

I want to learn your personal opinion of z980.
Do you feel that this camera can be rivaled to a lot of Japanese super zoom cameras?

I'm not careful for the noise in the photograph.
I attach importance to the following performance.
Suitable color for Kodak brand, response, and toughness.

I'm sorry again for my poor English.
Yours sincerely.

Noburo

mtclimber Sep 4, 2009 12:14 PM

Noburo-

Welcome to the Forum. Please, not to worry about your English. I can't speak one word of Japanese!

About 80 years ago the company that we know today as Fuji Cameras was the sole distributor of Kodak products in Japan. In the 1930's Fuji and Kodak severed their agreement and Kodak agreed to not compete against Fuji during their start-up years.

The Kodak Z-980 does indeed have the famous Kodak Color, as you can see from the photos that I posted in this thread. The fact that the Z-980 has a hot shoe that can mount an external flash is a real advantage. The Z-980 camera shares the same lens, and its internal camera parts with the Nikon P-90, the Pentax X-70. Those cameras are all made in the same Chinese factory.

So in conclusion, I believe that the Z-980 is competitive with the other 24X optical zoom cameras in the market.

Have a great day.

Z 980 Price has decreased

For the past few weeks the price of the Z980 has been up, sometimes above the $399 list price. Today I found it at J&R Music World for $349.88 + $11.10 shipping (no tax). Unfortunately for me, this is the exact cost of an operation my cat must have on Tuesday. So I will have to continue using my trusty Z612 for now. But Christmas is coming.....

mtclimber Sep 4, 2009 1:46 PM

meezer-

Yes, we all have to deal with our own personal priorities. Perhaps as we move toward Christmas the price will continue to drop.

Have a great day.

Early Christmas present

Comp USA had a sale flyer in the Sunday paper today (September 6, 2009). Kodak Z980 for $299. My dear hubby decided I needed an early Christmas present. We were waiting when they opened the store. So were ten other people. We went straight to cameras and got one of the only two Z980s that they had in stock. Batteries are charging... pictures later!

Aside from the sale price another reason to buy now is that out first grandchild will be born next month. Can't wait to take pictures of him.:sport-smiley-018:

mtclimber Sep 6, 2009 11:14 AM

Meezer-

That is really great news! You will really enjoy the Kodak Z980 camera. Perhaps not now, but it would be a really excellent idea to also purchase the Kodak P-20 external flash, as well. The external flash really extends the photo capabilities of the Z-980 camera.

Have a great day and post some photos soon.

So far so good! I really like the Z980. The batteries died very quickly so they are on the charger. I posted my pix at Flickr... let me know if I should post them here as well. Here's a link to the set at Flickr:

Thanks for the battery info, Sarah. I let the Kodak batteries charge for an hour and they have held the charge well. I've been reading the online instruction book and finally found the histogram on/off switch, and the RAW switch too. I am finding that there's some noise in low light, but I expected that. Many reviews that I'd read said the battery latch was flimsy. While it's not as sturdy as the one on my Z612 it's not that bad. I like the red eye fill in option. I'm finding the menus relatively easy to navigate, much like my Z612. I'm pleased that I can fit the 980 in the same purse that I've used to carry my 612. I thought it would be too big but it fits. Tonight we're going to Crystal Beach (west coast Florida on the Gulf of Mexico) so I can take pix of the sunset. I'll be back later with some more photos to share.
Meezer
PS I've added several more pix to my Flickr page here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/meezer6...7622146219313/
They're not particularly great shots, I'm just experimenting to see what the camera will and won't do.

It sounds like you are having lot of fun with the new Z-980. Your photos are impressive.

MrMayface Sep 7, 2009 6:46 PM

$299! Hot dog! All the Comp USA's have closed in Houston, so no go for me. At that price I think I would jump all over it. Right now I'm turn between this and the Nikon D5000. Hopefully I can find a deal on something pretty soon.

Love my new camera! Kodak color is so vibrant. The macro+ is very impressive. Here's a shot of the center of a zinnia flower. I am so glad that I found the Z980 at a price I could afford.

All Z980 users-

Hello.
I got Z980 today.
My Z980 might be defective goods possibly.
My camera becomes impossible to operate while occasionally using it.
Therefore, I detached the battery.
Do you think that my Z980 is defective goods?

Noburo

mtclimber Sep 9, 2009 11:20 AM

Noburo-

Yes, there is a high possibility the your Z-980 is defective, I am very sorry to say. The camera should not become inoperative. I would certainly have your dealer check the camera for both function and full operation.

Have a great day.

Did you charge the battery completely before using the camera? When I got my Z980 on Sunday the batteries were very weak and took several hours to fully charge. Maybe that is the problem with your camera? I am sorry that you are having difficulties.
Best wishes, Meezer

Noburo Soma Sep 10, 2009 10:02 AM

Sarah & Meezer-

Thank you for advice to me.

I judged Z980 to be a breakdown.
I tried the camera by using eneloop with which it fully charged.
but, the symptom has not been improved.
Next, I doubted the compatibility of the SDHC card and the camera.
What can I do? :-(

I will return Z980 tomorrow. And, I obtain Z980 again.

Please look at this video.

Z-980 goes to a baby shower

http://www.flickr.com/photos/meezer6...7622233702149/

My new Z-980 went to a baby shower on Saturday. Above is a link to the pix. Some were taken in available indoor light, and I noticed quite a bit of purple fringeing. Some were taken with the flash. Some pix are good and some not so good. Just wanted to share my first experience with my new camera in a real life situation.
