My Kodak DC4800 zoom won't power on. Flashing icon indicates low battery even with AC adaptpr plugged in. I did the obvious and bought anoather battery - no luck. Then I bought an external charger. Both batteries charge up fine (~4.4 volts) but camera still won't come on. Is this a common and/or expensive problem or should I throw it in the trash and get something newer ?

Sounds exaftly like what one of my previous cameras (dc4900) did.. Turned out to be the power board. .. under warranty thank god. flat rate repair was quoted 150 I think it was..
