Some kind of grasshopper. That area is full of things like that right now. Most of them fly and have nice patterns on their wings but it's impossible to get an in-flight pic.

I guess the blending is why they didn't move away. Can't tell if they change color.

Cool picture... Just out of sheer curiosity, was this shot done with just macro mode... or was a close up filter (or other similar device)involved?

Just macro mode. I did with the hoppers what I do with dragonflies. I moved slowly while moving progressively closer and taking pics at increments. They're not as likely to bolt that way and will tolerate the camera being pretty close.
