I'm totally confused. I took some moon shots last night using my P850 and my new Olympus t-con expecting some great pictures. I set the camera on the tripod: 5.0 mp, fine jpeg, f # various, speed various, 2 second delay to eliminate camera shake. Pictures came out OK. But then this morning, I noticed the size of the files as I was attempting to zoom in on the pictures to see more details. They were all around 250 kb. Now here is where I'm confused. Because I shot at 5 mp and fine jpeg I expected larger files to allow me to zoom in and print larger pictures with no loss. With the size that they turned out to be the pictures cannot allow me to do this. What is my problem?

There's no problem here. Just with moon shots the file sizes will be smaller because there is less in the picture. Basically, moon shots are black background, a white ball, and some detail. Thus, small file size. Nothing worng with your camera.

Since you shot st 5mp, you should be able to enlarge and print.

Hope this helps! :)

Cheers.

Makes so much sense. Big white dot, black background. Thank you.

Does that camera have a super fine or equivalent mode ?

250kb seems a very small size.

Using my Sony H1 + tcon I get roughly 1Mb files when shooting the moon.

I expected a higher file size using the settings I did.

Nope...That's about right for the file size! One thing though when you crop to get an enlarged image you may find some noise creeping in the closer you crop! Try a few in RAW and see how they turn out. Also if you put a border around the photo it will stand out better! Just a few thoughts!

Thanks for the input y'all. I didn't activate the accesory lens when I did those moon shots. Would that have any affect on the pictures quality and size?

Not sure about the size. But, I'm pretty sure it will give a sharper shot. And overall better focus and quality.

Cheers.

I've seen some where it helps and some where it doesn't. Try it and see...then report your findings.
