The kodak easyshare software that came with my P880 gives me nothuing but headache: it's slow to load, slow to download, slow to display pictures, slow to close and leaves the systray icon running that has to be closed manually. I have no such problems with my ACDSee.
Is there any other automated way to get the pictures from the camera into date-stamped folders in a specified folder on my disk?

A USB card reader. I bought several (as Xmas stocking fillers) for a uk pound each the other day. They work fine.

I fully agree with Alan T.'s recommendation. That's my method as well. You may however want to consider updating your EasyShare software from what was shipped with the camera. The link for version 6.4 at Kodak's Poland site is below:

There is also a firmware update (1.02) if your P880 doesn't have that already.

Thanks for the suggestions, my camera already runs 1.02, anfd my pc software is 6.4.0.100 so there's no need to update.
I'll look for some USB readers then.

Great combination which I have for my Z612.

Forgot to mention that the dates folders That ZoomBroswer creates are based on the dates the photos are taken, not the dates the photos were uploaded (This is what EasyShare does and is another feature of ES that I don't like).
