I've had the Z650 for some time and the Z612 for a couple of days. IMO, the Z612 is worth the extra cost.
Having looked at literally thousands of my own Z650 picsI think I've come to appreciate what makes for the better pic and I think the Z612 has the better pic.Others may disagree but I base that opinion on much consideration of what constitutes a good pic. The image stabilization certainly helps with the long-zoom shots. The Z650has a 10X zoom and the Z612 a 12X zoom. Sincezoom ratios aresome multiple of a camera's wide-angle rating, I'd consider the Z612 to be an 11X zoom as compared to the Z650. Z650 is 38 - 380mm (as 35mm equivalent) while Z612 is 35-420mm. I hope that was clear and will try to answer any specific questions you may have. |

I also own both the Z-612 and the Z-650. There is a big difference in having IS, which is a big improvement. The other changes are small, a new body and slight longer zoom.
However, having IS has improved my photos considerably. Sarah |

Yes, and thank you. Felt a need to move on and, when it came down to it, the Z612 was my choice. I think that 8, 10 and maybe 12 megapixel cameras will soon enough become the norm with a whole new range of cameras to choose from. Guess we'll see. |

Yes, time and the technical details seem to increase rapidly. However, in the new camera, becoming accustomed to the new camera, having more capability, and increasing our shkills, we have a whole bunch of fun. Sarah |

If you opt to go without IS, you may also want to look into the Z710... it's identical to the z650, but with a 7.1 effective mp CCD. I know Wal-Mart is carrying both for the same price right now, but a markdown will be coming down by next week on the z650, so if you decide the for z650, wait a week or so
