Most Great Lakes ships have self unloaders. The 250 foot boom seen on deck can be raised and lowered and also swung fore and aft. a crew-member operates a controller and the mate on watch tells him by radio where he wants the boom. Below the bottom of the cargo hold is a conveyer belt that runs the length of the hold. there are a series of gatesthe length of the hold. A crewmember operates the gates and the mate on deck tells the gateman by radio which gates to open and close during unloading.A transfer belt picks up on the load from the cargo hold belt and brings it to the belt on boom on deck. andy74
