This link primarily talks about film photography, but the basic principles carry over to digital too.

Hey dawg! I know that DSLR's go above 800 ISO:blah:
I mean with Kodaks P n S cameras and Prosumer cameras, they all seem to have bad high ISO modes. Like to be quite honest, the P850 performs poorly at ISO 400 and ISO 800 can only be used in 1.2MP mode... and then the noise is insane anyways. In comparison, I've seen Sony prosumer cameras that shoot ISO 1600 without any discernable noise and even little point and shoots that can do ISO 800 with no noticeable noise. bigdawg wrote: Quote:

Sounds like some great cameras for high ISO's. Didn't mean to sound flip. Just stating a fact! My DX6490 does very well at ISO 400 and I couldn't say why the P850 wouldn't! Different CCD maybe???

Noise will really show up w/ such a plain looking background (i.e. ice).

Well I personally won't go to 400 ISO unless I'm desperate, I usually get poor results.
And here is what I"m talking about when I say other brands have good ISO modes. This is a shot taken by a user in the Sony forum with a Sony R1 at ISO 3200. http://nickphoto123.smugmug.com/gall...86728477/Large I can't even see much noise besides on the dancers black pants. That same shot with ISO 400 on my Kodak? It wouldn't even be usable. I don't mean to complain, the P850 is a great camera, but the ISO is one thing that dissapoints me. |

if you uses iso 400, and use a noise removal software, like The Gimp (it's free) I find it works great and removes most of the noise!

I will have to try that. I have Photoshop Elements 4, it should have a good noise removal function.
